Techsoft 2D Engraving

Post by paul » Mon 27 Nov , 2006 10:10 am

I want to do some engraving of a sundial face which obviously has text around the outside. Millcam designer is too basic for this as it wont allow you to curve the text.
You can do it in 2D design then convert them in millcam designer but I find DXF files to be useless, a simple text character done this way is hundreds of lines of code with the cutter making tiny little random cuts going in and out of the workpiece constantly. Is there anyway to stop this and get the toolpath to just follow the text?
Also techsoft are selling VCarve software that looks great for this kind of thing but the catalogues only list it for Roland machines.
Thanks
Paul

Paul,

There are several options open to you.

Do you have VR Milling 5? if not read the upgrade sheet as this will improve the speed of manufacture as all the tiny moves you mention are buffered together and can be cut at speed. V5 also has a simple DXF file import that will let you save files in Techsoft and load directly into VR Milling.

With regard to V carving the software you looked at was from a company called VETRIC. The educational version comes only with the roland post but you can buy a single licence of the software direct and it will have the Denford Post in it (Contact tonym@vectric.com)

The alternative is to buy ArtCAM Insignia E or full ArtCAM. This will allow V carving of Text and vectors.

The best thing would be to update to VR Milling 5 and try the DXF import first.

When you want to engrave text you need to remove the fill from the text in Techsoft to give you an outline only(it is located in the settings part of the text menu). If you want the text to be filled then change the solid fill to a cross hatch fill. This will give you a lot of lines but nothing like the number you will get with a solid fill property to the text
