Retrofitting Spindle Digital RPM meter to a Viceroy lathe

Post by dazz » Thu 09 Apr , 2015 10:36 am

Hello

I found a Chinese supplier of cheap digital tachometers specifically designed for machine tool applications.
The trigger 1 pulse per revolution and measure the period between pulses. This means good update times even at low rpm.

They are available in red and blue. I fitted a blue one to the Viceroy to match the colour scheme.

I was able to modify an existing bushing on the spindle to fit a trigger magnet. The bushing retains the rotating components on the spindle and is not loaded.

I was able to mount the sensor on a bracket within the headstock.

The existing bushing modified by potting a magnet in a milled slot. A similar slot was milled on the other side to balance the bushing.

The sensor mounted inside the headstock. It is bolted to holes drilled and threaded from outside the headstock.
