What is the purpose of the tail stock on the lathes when you can't operate them with the lid shut?

It can be used to support a longer part and for turning between centres.

I must be going blonde in my old age! It's only the other day I was actually doing some between centres and with a steady mounted at half way on the big lathe at work.
