Re: Denford Vicerory TDS1 PCS in a sorry state _ Rebuild?
Hi There are a couple of posts http://www.denfordata.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=3322 and http://www.denfordata.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=3945 you might want to look at. I don't know how the lead/feed screw are retained but I expect you will need to gain access from the back or from under the headstock. The...

Re: TDS1/1GB lathe new owner advice
Hi
If you can't make one, get one made. It won't be cheap but it will restore a very useful feature of the lathe.

Hello
Another old Viceroy on auction in New Zealand.
It looks like it is fitted with a very basic gear box.
It probably has a set of change wheels included.

Re: Denford Viceroy TDS VSD conversion
Hi The photos show a sample of the finish achieved on my next project. This is a manky old piece of hot rolled mild steel. With HSS, the finish is like sandpaper on this metal. With cermet tooling and smooth VSD, the finish is what you see. Note the reflections of the tool on the workpiece. Not too ...

Re: Denford Viceroy TDS VSD conversion
Hi
It's an ABB industrial VSD unit connected to an ABB 1.1kW motor.
I have machined a couple of items and I have already noticed an improvement in finish.
With the old V belt, the cabinet used to rumble and the lathe vibrated. It's dead smooth now.

Re: Denford Viceroy TDS VSD conversion
Hello The next stage was to fit the motor and new mount. With this done, I made up a temporary control box to test what I can do with the VSD and how I would use it. See the video Youtube demonstration of Viceroy TDS with VSD I now have to design and build a proper control system. This will include ...

Re: Denford Viceroy TDS VSD conversion
Hi The next stage is the replacement motor mounting arrangement. The factory mount is too floppy to use with poly-Vee belts. They need the pulleys to be accurately aligned. The new mount is a bolt in replacement for the factory items. The mount was fabricated from rectangular steel tube. It is much ...

Re: Viceroy TDS 1/1GB Metric in Good condition
Hi
Lathes of that quality in that condition are very rare here.
I don't know the answer but if yours has the holes for the label, it probably has a chromed bed.
Note that only the carriage slides are chromed. The tailstock slides are not. They look different.

Viceroy TDS 1/1GB Metric in Good condition
Hello Here are some photos of a Viceroy that has just been auctioned in New Zealand. The fact that it is a Viceroy makes it rare. A metric one in very good condition is makes this a diamond. Being 3-phase, it is not a popular choice with home workshoppers so the auction price was about 1/3 less than...

Re: Headstock / bed alignment.
Hi I am no expert. I just make it up as I go. Your approach seems reasonable to me. Do not rely on the top of the vees being "right". Put your level on the carriage and move it along the bed. Pick one (any one) adjusting screw on the bed and make all adjustments on that one only. Good luck Dazz

Re: Denford Viceroy TDS VSD conversion
Hi Another step closer to completing a VSD conversion. These are photos of the motor pulley. The motor is 1.1kW which means that it will be able to produce at least as much torque over the speed range as the standard motor. VSDs provide constant torque regardless of speed. This pulley is attached to...

Re: Headstock / bed alignment.
Hi Unless the lathe has been abused, the headstock alignment should be fixed. I would suggest checking for any twist in the bed before touching the headstock alignment. A twist on the bed will cause a tapered workpiece. There are four bolts holding the bed to the cabinet accessible through the doors...

Re: Viceroy TDS 1/1GB metric..planning to turn into CNC
Hi The post here http://www.denfordata.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=3218 includes drawings of a ball screw saddle and ball lead screw. The cross slide drive arrangement is quite compact without excessive overhang. It wouldn't be too hard to copy this arrangement and retrofit to a Viceroy. I just wish...

Re: Viceroy TDS 1/1GB metric..planning to turn into CNC
Hi I have looked at home foundry work but for me it is not viable. The cost of the furnace, crucible, tools and safety equipment make it too expensive for a small number of jobs. If I ever get to do a CNC conversion, I would focus on making the pattern (the labour intensive part) for the carriage an...

Re: TDS 1/1GB saddle and rear tool posts
Hi I know this is an old thread but.... I found that improved tool grinding was only part of the solution. Watching this video shows how sharp tools cause rubbish finish. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRuSYQ5Npek What is happening is that a built up edge (BUE) is forming on the tool edge then break...

Re: Viceroy TDS 1/1GB metric..planning to turn into CNC
Hi Some interesting CNC retro fits. For a CNC Viceroy, if the apron is discarded, it would be worth looking at replacing the carriage and cross slide. There would be no requirement for a top slide either. This would allow a taller and thicker carriage giving more space to mount the ball screw. It ma...

Re: Viceroy TDS 1/1GB metric..planning to turn into CNC
Hi Progress on my CNC conversion is pitifully slow. I am too busy making stuff the old fashioned way. The first step is to get electronic control of the speed. This is not essential but very useful. I am most of the way through changing the 4-step pulley to a single poly-Vee pulley with VSD. I have ...

Do you have a detailed drawing of part ML100 141, the counter shaft? I specifically want to know if the shaft is machined eccentric to adjust the gear spacing.
