Sudden Z drop
Hi - I am having a problem where the Z value jumps down about 4mm seemingly at random. I am using a 1mm ball nose cutter, with a tapered shank. I am aware that if the shank fouls the workpiece a Z jump can happen, but it seems to be continuing. The enclosed photo shows the beginning of a cut showing...

Re: Quickcam Pro time taken for cutting?
Thanks Steve, and forgive my ignorance. Why can't Quickcam Pro know how long these things take?

Re: Quickcam Pro time taken for cutting?
Thanks Admin. I suppose what I really wanted was a little box underneath that purpley preview saying this will take x hours/minutes. Surely as the software runs through simulation it can time itself? (Boxford Geocam did/does... )... even if it is a relative time - some kind of estimation is s...

Quickcam Pro time taken for cutting?
Hello - is there a way to determine how long a particular toolpath will take to cut? Sometimes something looks good until you realise it has a squilllion lines will take till next wednesday. Thanks

Re: Alternative to QuickCAM 2D?
That's absolutely fantastic, just what I wanted to hear. Well done Denford!
That dxf wizard does exactly what is required, and saves having to faff about with yet another piece of software.

Alternative to QuickCAM 2D?
Hello- Due to a HoD whose focus is elsewhere, I'm looking for a FREE piece of software that will do a 2/2.5D toolpath (*.fnc) that I can run in VR Milling on my Novamill. I know QuickCAM Pro (which we have) will do a waterline cut that will emulate this, but I'm looking for a simpler option. Is ther...

Re: Novamill hangs
I have taken the cable straight in the box and into the baldor card. The internal cable passed right next to the mains cable inside - though why it has suddenly started causing a problem I don't know.
Hopefully, that'll be it then...

Re: Novamill Part names
I took the thing apart and it seemed, according to this http://www.denfordata.com/bb/download/file.php?id=766 that part RM1/715A has become slightly bent at the top and rotates with a slight wobble, if that's the technical term. It fouls on part RM7/105 and that's what is growling. I gave it a seein...

Novamill Part names
Hi Can someone please clarify which part is the 'Headstock' and which part is the 'Axis Bearings'? I am trying to maintain/lubricate the thing. Is 'Headstock' the main spindle? Presumably the spindle and the spindle motor have bearings that will both need renewing after several miles of wear? Are th...

Re: Novamill hangs
I'll try your suggestion Admin;
Martin - thanks. Is there a diagram that will show the parts you describe?
Also, just now I've been having a little box pop up with 'device driver call failed', before a 'type B' hang.

Re: Novamill hangs
Hello again! Still have the problem, I'm afraid. I've replaced the USB cable and the PC, new install of all software including easyinstaller and checked the firmware of the novamill. Still hanging. For what it's worth, there seems to be two types of 'hang', both result in cutter movement, but no x, ...

Re: Novamill hangs
The USB cable was coiled around a whole load of mains cables. I've unravelled it and tried the machine, and it completed a job without the problem. Let's hope that's cured it!

Re: Novamill hangs
Hi - tried easy upgrade, everything checks out (see image) Also loaded the latest version of VR milling - downloaded today. Still hangs. It worked for a few minutes, then it got to the point where it would only do 1 line of code at a time before hanging. Any more thoughts most desperately needed! Th...

Re: Novamill hangs
Hello again Well we've finally got some of the oil and lubed it all up and it's running a treat again :) We have also changed the USB port, as suggested. However the Hanging is still ocurring. It is an intermittent hanging, happening at whim, so I wouldn't think toolpath specific. In fact we're in a...

BTW: the user manual makes reference to certain lubricants - can't find any reference to them anywhere. Can I use 3 in 1?

Re: Novamill hangs
Thanks admin.
I think the 'growling' is vibration/resonance caused by the Z slide, rather than the spindle motor itself, as it runs smoothly when stationary (when it's hanging).
Might this cause a similar prob? I suppose the only way to be really sure is to lube it up and see.
