Re: Triac Spindle Speed Upgrade
Hi Brian. With a 3:1 reduction you can get 8000 rpm from the chinese spindle and the bearings are close to the max op speed. I would replace the bearings with better ones to be on the safe side.

Re: Orac electronics
i think the problem is where you are, and the useable bits are the drives and psu. Most Oracs end up with Mach3 or Linux.

mechanically it will be fine, but if your looking at the one on ebay beware as there's some odd bidding going on with that one.

i would love to have the stepper drivers and support frame, and any transformers that you don't use even the inverter if you're not using it.
i would be happy to pay for these and all postage costs.

Re: Early versus late spindle motor?
early green triacs with the wide head have a small three phase motor 1/2 hp i think, the newer white triacs have a 1hp dc motor.
Current trend is to fit a 3 phase 3hp water cooled high frequency spindle (200 - 400hz, 18000 - 24000 rpm) and gear it down 3:1 to get a more powerful and faster spindle.

you may want to consider a chinese three phase motor if you can get one to fit in the starmill and gear the motor down with a change of pulleys.

reboot the computer and it will give you a message before windows starts to press a certain key (usually F2 or delete) to go into setup.

try switching the parallel port setting to epp in the bios, pin 1 does have issues if not on epp.
