Re: My new viceroy lathe

Hi

You need to remove the motor and mount and relocate the motor further right to align the belt. That much misalignment will create a lot of rumbling noise, vibration and ruin the belt.
I have a genuine 1ph motor/pulley for sale but it is on the wrong side of the planet.

Re: My new viceroy lathe

Hello I got all worried about using the correct lubricants when I rebuilt my lathe. I went as far as consulting a lubrication engineer from one of the major oil companies. Basically the best lubricants available at the time Viceroys were made are not as good as the lowest spec lubricants of today. I...

Re: My new viceroy lathe

Hello I have found that a Denford is on the lower limits of power for driving carbide tools. Study the specifications of the tools you are using. You are likely to find that the minimum speeds and feeds for the tool equate to heavy cuts for a machine like a Denford. I wind up the speed and feed as m...

Re: My new viceroy lathe

Hello The spindle bearings are standard Timken taper roller bearings. The same bearings are in common use on other applications (eg. Cessna aircraft wheel bearings). The inner and outer cones are ordered separately. Make sure you get the right version. Removing the spindle and bearings is not too di...

Re: New guy new Lathe to me anyway

Hello

I fitted a VSD to my Denford.
This included replacing the 1 phase motor with a 3 phase motor.

Hi
Don't be afraid to open the gearbox. This is what you should find inside.

Re: Viceroy T.D.S 1/1 G.B Apron Stripdown

Hello Remove the end support on the right end of the lathe bed and simply slide the saddle off the end of the bed. I never removed the lead shaft/feed screw. I think that requires the gearbox to be disemboweled. I have been to a lot of places on the planet, but I haven't found anywhere else that I w...

Re: Denford paint

Hi

I read somewhere that someone else had tried to match the Denford blue. As I recall, they couldn't match the hammerite.

I have another lathe and had the local paint shop mix a match in enamel paint. It was perfect but it wasn't hammerite.

It resists throw off.

Re: Strip/renew bearings on Viceroy lathe!

Hi On my lathe, I just opened up the bearings, inspected then cleaned them. The previous owner had changed them so I didn't need to. The bearings are relatively cheap and easily found. If you do change the bearings, properly seating the bearings back into the headstock is very important. Make sure t...

Re: Power cross feed won't work on my TDS 1/1.

If your leadscrew is imperial and you have a 127 tooth gear, you can cut metric threads.
The range of metric threads you can cut will depend on the range of gears you have.

Re: Power cross feed won't work on my TDS 1/1.

Hi I had some training when I was young but I am just a home work shop hack. First results weren't that good but with better steel and technique, things improved. I haven't seen your model but it looks like the top lever is for the back gear and the lower lever is spindle gear speed change. There is...

Re: Power cross feed won't work on my TDS 1/1.

Hi I went down the same road after I brought my lathe. To do metric, you need a whole set of change gears plus a custom made banjo (cast and machined). After all that time and money, you only end up with a subset of metric threads. Somewhere on this site, I uploaded a spreadsheet calculator for impe...

Re: Power cross feed won't work on my TDS 1/1.

Hi The big advantage with an imperial lathe is that you can make tools, chuck back plates and adapters that fit the spindle. The only time I have absolutely needed a metric thread was when I made an ER32 collet chuck. I had to get someone else to machine that. I don't think anyone has been able to g...

Hi
That's 4s up and 4s down.
My VFD achieves this by ramping the speed. There is no brake resistor.

Re: my new lathe an old viceroy

Hi dazz I will program the VFD presently, how long did you give the motor to slow down & stop & run up, About 4 seconds did you fit a brake to the VFD. No definitely not. The risk is that stopping too quickly will cause the chuck to unwind off the spindle. What size motor did you fit. 1.2kW Did you...

Re: Power cross feed won't work on my TDS 1/1.

Hi Congratulations on your new old lathe purchase. Don't be nervous about diving into the apron. It is quite simple. I removed the apron by taking of the lead/feed screw support on the tailstock end of the lathe. I then slide the carriage/apron out past the tailstock end of the bed. Make sure the le...
