Re: Threading auto knock-off
Hi Here is the best drawing I have seen for a threading dog clutch. http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general/auto-disengaging-thread-lever-144929/index2.html Where it is labeled "Lead Screw" should read "output shaft". For the Viceroy, this arrangement would need to be fitted to replace the tumb...

Re: Threading auto knock-off
Hi Adding a threading dog clutch would be a seriously good accessory to add to any lathe that I have looked at in the past. There is plenty of room to add one to a Viceroy because of the space made available by removing the tumbler gears. I can see opportunity to improve on the designs I have seen s...

Factory Made Taper Tracer Attachment
Hello
There has been some interest in the Denford taper attachment. It's actually fairly straight forward and would be relatively easy to make a copy.
I have used a similar concept to make a tracer attachment for the top slide to shape the end of bars.

Re: Threading auto knock-off
Hi I looked at the problem of adding a dog-clutch for threading. The major issue is achieving a mechanical linkage between the gears running off the left end of the spindle, and the apron. Perhaps the easiest (but not easy) option is to run the linkage behind the threading gearbox. The fundamental p...

Re: Threading auto knock-off
Hello The only drawings I have come from this site. Chances are that a lathe without this feature could be fitted with the knock-off bar. This assumes that Denford used the same parts for all lathes, with or without the knock off bar. The only tricky part of the bar is the tooth rack that engages wi...

Re: Threading auto knock-off
Hello Afraid not. It needs some careful design to get around all the shafts, gears etc in that area. If the trigger mechanism was sandwiched between two plates, it could be made to be about 5mm thick total. To use the half-nut lever to reset the trigger would probably require an adjustable travel. A...

Re: Vertical milling slide for TDS 1/2 PCS?
Hi OK, I see that the Boxford and Denford have different spigots on the bottom of the compound. This link http://madmodder.net/index.php?topic=4171.0 is for a Boxford but you could apply the concept to making a boring table. Denford did make a T-slot boring table for the Viceroy. A shop made table c...

Hello
Yes, it is factory original. Not the best designed feature. It is more of a push off than a knock off.
It is reset with the half-nut lever.

Re: Threading auto knock-off
Hi The knock-off is rubbish. Constant use would round off the edges of the half nut threads. The slow release would provide uncertain release. I reckon the way to go is to use the principle of a bolt action sniper rifle trigger mechanism. http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/gunsmithing/trigger-my-l...

Re: Vertical milling slide for TDS 1/2 PCS?
Hello
My Denford tool post is bolted into a wide T slot as seen here.
It makes it a versatile and rigid mount.
As far as I can tell, this looks identical to the Boxford.

Re: Vertical milling slide for TDS 1/2 PCS?
Hi
I suggest you look for an old Boxford / Denford vertical slide. It is likely that the Boxford will fit the Denford.
I usually find it is better to buy good quality used tools than cheap new tools.

Hi
A good point. That risk is mitigated with seismic restraints that will hold the lathe upright in the event of an earthquake or other disturbance.

Re: Inverter / Variable Frequency drive unit
Hello I used a recycled centrifugal fan. The fan cools the motor at all speeds. Fitting a separate fan motor ensures cooling at low speeds and during periods when the motor has stopped. At high speeds, it avoids power being sucked from the motor driving a fan supplying too much air. Power increases ...

Re: Inverter / Variable Frequency drive unit
Hello
The whining noise you can hear is the fan mounted on the back of the motor. It's not that loud. The auto gain control on the camera sound makes it sound louder than it really is.
Inverter technology has come a long way in the last 20 years.

Hello
Here is my effort : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJG5ohpvsVU
The Chinese have a saying that the quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.
If you intend to do a decent job of installation you might as well get a decent VFD and motor.

Hello
It is likely the stepped pulleys are not a matched set.
You could make one stepped pulley to solve the problem.

Re: My new viceroy lathe
Hi
The motor with both cast iron mounts should come out. There is a bolt in each corner of the lower castings.
Here is a photo of mine. Note the motor is rotated 90 degrees from its normal position.

Re: My new viceroy lathe
Hello
Rather than cut holes in your cabinet, just unbolt the entire motor mount. There is a bolt in each corner that fastens the mount to the cabinet.
There will always be backlash in any gear train. So long as the teeth are undamaged, you should be OK.

Re: My new viceroy lathe
Hi Yes an halfway up the sight glass. I recommend you take off the front cover and clean out the gearbox. The gearbox has an opening at the back that allows dust to enter. You will probably find a lot of sediment. Also, once in a while, run the gearbox at full rpm to splash oil across all moving par...
