Now all is left is to re-wind the tape over the coil that you initially removed and re-build the contactor. You should do all three contactors if you want to use all the stock buttons and use a 240V coolant pump too. The wiring also has to be changed. You cannot use the overload feature on the stop ...

I twisted the wire, turned it around the coil a couple of turns and scraped the insulation off it for soldering:

Now I un-wound the contactor. I didn't count the turns I removed but there must have been a thousand or more. I then reinforced the tail for soldering by making half a dozen loops and twisting them together.

Converting my 280synchro to single phase.

I recently bought a Viceroy 280 synchro which was fitted with a 3-phase motor and pump. Since I don't have 3-phase power and didn't want to run a 3-phase converter and lose the stock buttons I decided to convert the machine to single phase. Before you start, make sure you take photos and notes of al...

Not to worry, I have it sorted now I think. Running a single-phase motor with reverse and 240V coolant pump off the standard buttons & contactors :)

280 synchro switch schematic / wiring diagram

Does anyone have a wiring schematic for the synchro? I need to double-check my installation.

Thx
Pete.

FS:Viceroy 3phase motor

I've converted my lathe to single-phase so I have a standard Viceroy 3 phase motor for sale. It's off my 280 synchro but I'm sure it will fit most lathes of this type.

£25 & postage

I think the safest bet is to find a length of cross-slide or compound-slide screw and grind it to make a tap, then use that to produce a nut. That way we can guarantee having the right thread form. I've been on the look-out for such a thing without any luck so far.

Just to follow-up. Andy is right the 3-phase contactors won't pull-in with 240V power - but I've found a way to make them do it! I will start a new thread in the Machines section detailing the process. You can keep all the stock buttons and contactors and run a single phase motor no problem (so far)...

The handwheel is for moving the cross-slide. The knurled wheel is for zero-ing the dials. You hold the handwheel tight and turn the knurled part to line up 0 with the pointer. On the scale it should tell you the graduations, it will be either 0.001" or 0.02mm. Knowing this will help. hi pete thanks...

Hi Andy. I just won a 2HP single-phase motor last night on ebay, so I'll be using that. I have no problem running the extra wires to the motor and no problem at all mounting it. Luckily it has the 19mm shaft already which is handy so I can fit the drive pulley straight on. I'm hoping to use a capaci...

Hi William. The truth of the matter is that I am no longer sure what the heck they have produced for a cross-slide screw. I'm still working on it. My gut feeling is that it's an imperial screw but testing with a dial suggests otherwise. First question is - is your lathe imperial or metric? Does it h...

Got it all done now thanks for the help. It was a simple slide-on fit on the shaft and held with a bolt & cap-washer as shown in the wadkin manual. The retaining bolt I found in the bottom of the machine, the pulley had slid along the shaft and spun when the key had cleared the keyway causing the sh...

Here you go William: EDIT: PLEASE DISREGARD THE PREVIOUS INFO. Basically I assumed that since the dial was marked as .100"/turn and the screw thread was .500" OD they must have used an imperial screw. TUrns out that four turns of the dial moves the cross-slide 9.98mm so now it looks like we have a s...

I'll measure the thread on my synchro this weekend for you William. I will be able to give you the pitch but I don't know much about the forms used though having th epitch is a start. When I get a motor I could try to turn you a thread.
