Re: Power cross feed won't work on my TDS 1/1.

Hi I had some training when I was young but I am just a home work shop hack. First results weren't that good but with better steel and technique, things improved. I haven't seen your model but it looks like the top lever is for the back gear and the lower lever is spindle gear speed change. There is...

Re: Power cross feed won't work on my TDS 1/1.

Hi

I have gone the same path. Old but good.

You can see samples of my work on the projects forum here viewforum.php?f=14
The Viceroy is a very capable machine.

Re: Power cross feed won't work on my TDS 1/1.

Hi I went down the same road after I brought my lathe. To do metric, you need a whole set of change gears plus a custom made banjo (cast and machined). After all that time and money, you only end up with a subset of metric threads. Somewhere on this site, I uploaded a spreadsheet calculator for impe...

Re: Power cross feed won't work on my TDS 1/1.

Hi The big advantage with an imperial lathe is that you can make tools, chuck back plates and adapters that fit the spindle. The only time I have absolutely needed a metric thread was when I made an ER32 collet chuck. I had to get someone else to machine that. I don't think anyone has been able to g...

Re: my new lathe an old viceroy

Hi
That's 4s up and 4s down.
My VFD achieves this by ramping the speed. There is no brake resistor.

Re: my new lathe an old viceroy

Hi dazz I will program the VFD presently, how long did you give the motor to slow down & stop & run up, About 4 seconds did you fit a brake to the VFD. No definitely not. The risk is that stopping too quickly will cause the chuck to unwind off the spindle. What size motor did you fit. 1.2kW Did you...

Re: Power cross feed won't work on my TDS 1/1.

Hi Congratulations on your new old lathe purchase. Don't be nervous about diving into the apron. It is quite simple. I removed the apron by taking of the lead/feed screw support on the tailstock end of the lathe. I then slide the carriage/apron out past the tailstock end of the bed. Make sure the le...

Re: my new lathe an old viceroy

Hi

I am part way through replacing a 1 phase motor with a VFD/3phase motor. This has included a new motor mount and poly-vee pulley arrangement.
Progress can be seen at this link.

Looks like your lathe will come up nicely with just a good clean.

Live Tailstock MT3 to spindle nose adapter

Hi Just something I have made with my lathe. At one end is a No.3 Morse Taper that fits into the tailstock. At the other end is the same thread used on the headstock spindle. In the middle are two Timken taper roller bearings. The bearings are protected by seals to prevent any contamination getting ...

Denford Viceroy Motor, Pulley and Mount

Hi

I have an original motor, matched pair of stepped pulleys and the cast iron motor base plate for sale.

I will sell items separately.

Ideal for restoration work on a Denford lathe.

These items are located in New Zealand.

I have converted my lathe to VFD and no longer require the items for sale.

Re: TDS1 Saddle anti-lift sliding clamp

Hi It is a piece of metal held under the bed by a stud that screws to the underside of the apron. It would be simple to make a replacement from mild steel. The stud thread will be BSW. The length is not critical but it is close to being a square. The piece is shown in this photo. http://www.denforda...

Viceroy now fitted with adjustable feet

Hi I am tall enough that I had to stoop over the Viceroy. I fitted adjustable feet that reduced vibration through the floor and raised the lathe a few centimeters. It is easier to use the lathe for long periods and I can clear the swarf that gets underneath. The feet are specifically made for mounti...

My eyes are getting old so I have fitted a magnifying light to my lathe.
I made an adapter to support the lamp. An easy job.

Re: Viceroy 250 help.

Hi I had problems with finish when I first brought my Viceroy. It was all my fault. I found with carbide tips you have to push the lathe with high speeds and high feeds. Using good metal makes a big difference as well. Cermets give me the best finish on steels but I have achieved a mirror finish on a...

Hi
That's when the handles are replaced with motors controlled by a computer.

Before going down that path, it would be best to get comfortable with using the lathe as it is (after a clean up).

Re: viceroy denford lathe

Hi
Welcome to the forum.

Looks like you have a Mk2 TDS variant.
Take a look at lathes.co.uk for some info.

Spares are very rare for these machines.

Your lathe would be a good candidate for a CNC retrofit because it doesn't have a gearbox and other features that would not be needed.

Re: Headstock Re-alignment Problem - Help Requested

Hi I would suggest removing the headstock and re-checking the mounting surfaces for grit and/or corrosion. The slightest contamination between the surfaces would be enough to cause measurable misalignment. I purchased a 3MT finishing reamer for exactly the same reason. Remember that everything flexe...

Re: ER32 Chuck

Hi I had a similar problem with making the metric collet holder thread on an imperial Denford. My solution was to get someone else to make the metric thread on their metric lathe. You could get a set of change gears to convert from metric to imperial but it would be cheaper to convert to an electron...
