Re: Considering replacing intermediate countershaft Viceroy TDS 1/2 PCS

Richard, Sorry for being so incredibly slow to reply. The original countershaft adjusters gave me some problems (as they have always done, since I purchased this machine second hand) and when I dismantled the countershaft assembly I found those "milled flats" looked more like they had be filed vague...

Considering replacing intermediate countershaft Viceroy TDS 1/2 PCS

I have a fairly standard setup - 3 phase Hoover motor (1425 RPM), VFD and countershaft. I am considering replacing the motor with a spare 1 HP 8-pole (680 RPM) motor and ditching the intermediate countershaft. Issues to consider are the length of a single belt, spindle speed, and torque. This is cur...

Re: Installing Denford Viceroy on wooden bearers

I ended up buying a long length of mild steel box section (90 square, 4mm thick) from the scrapyard. I've also added some spacers and bolts. It works well. Seems rock solid and a more comfortable height for me.

Re: Installing Denford Viceroy on wooden bearers

I only have a Boxford Tud manual lathe. I found this as a school/student machine too low for me at 6' 3". I made some shuttering the size of each end of the lathe, drilled the concrete floor within the shuttering, fitted rawl plugs and used 150mm screws at 4" centres so I could level them (my floor...

Installing Denford Viceroy on wooden bearers

I'm considering increasing the height of my Denford Viceroy lathe by screwing it to wooden bearers sitting on the existing concrete floor. I would like it closer (to aid my viewing) and higher (for comfort). My intention is to make it just high enough so the bearers are raised ever-so-slightly off t...

Re: Countershaft drive belt tension.

Hi Each end of the pulley shaft is machined like a two pronged fork. These fit around the adjustment screw in the slot. If one slot is higher than the other, the shaft will jamb. It is as simple as that. Thanks - I think someone had jammed one side, but it's now adjusted correctly. I didn't have a ...

Re: New To Me TDS 1 (LS)

Thought I would post a few pics of my countershaft arrangement as it isn't like the one that has adjustment for belt tension. (As per plan pic) I took it out as I had convinced myself there must be some form of adjustment I just can't see it. Anyway there isn't. The cast brackets are bolted through...

Re: Countershaft drive belt tension.

My countershaft-to-spindle linkbelt is stretched or worn (it looks quite old) and needs adjustment. Looking at the countershaft brackets from below there appear to be two slotted adjusters. Well, I assumed that is what they were but they will not move. Is there a hidden locking mechanism or is the a...

Re: Feedshaft worm drawing wanted Viceroy PCS lathe

Just a quick update to say that I flipped the worm around (the wear was uneven) and added a spring to the worm engagement lever mechanism to improve engagement between the worm and worm wheel. I made a small "dummy feedshaft" that I could use to assemble the whole apron assembly before feeding it ba...

Re: Feedshaft worm drawing wanted Viceroy PCS lathe

John isn't always easy to contact. He's on his own, so if hes working he won't answer the phone. Try early evening, or email him. Its well worth the effort. Time was he used to go off mountaineering (big stuff, the Alps, Himalayas etc) but presumably thats not the case at present. OK, thanks. I wil...

Scroll up about 2 spaces from this entry and you will see 'ML Drawings for TDSI lathes' Open that and scroll down until you see 'ML 105 and 110 drawings' Open that , and scroll though till you see ML110 308, followed shortly by ML 110 312. There are your drawings with full manufacturing details. Yo...

Re: Feedshaft worm drawing wanted Viceroy PCS lathe

And another question if I can, I am trying to strip down the apron. The highlighted shaft appears to move freely but does not push out. Any idea what it is holding it?

Feedshaft worm drawing wanted Viceroy PCS lathe

I posted about this some while ago (maybe 2 years ago?) when I initially bought the lathe. I have now dismantled the apron again with a view to doing something about this. The worm looks badly worn and I presume this is why it is not engaging completely with the worm wheel. Actually, I would have ex...

Re: New guy, old lathe, advice please!

Those slugs will come out. I had a similar lathe and they were stuck pretty well in there with fine swarf dust and old grease. Run some penetrating oil/brake cleaner in the holes and let it soak a while (like you have done). Then lift on the compound slide base whilst hitting all around with a smal...

Re: New guy, old lathe, advice please!

Hi Brian, Sorry to hear the plugs are resisting your attempts to extract them. Possibly they've had a bit of abuse previously and the ends have got a bit chewed. The only other suggestion I can think of at present would be to superglue a strong magnet to the end of a plastic or wooden dowel and see...

Re: New guy, old lathe, advice please!

Hi Pzy, Drawing ML100/500 shows this assembly - http://www.denfordata.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=2986 Remove the 2 grub screws from the little 'wings' - then you should be able to see a plug in each; these have an angled end to engage on the dovetail. Edit - according to the drawings (ML100/507 & ...
