Re: 4th axis

Thanks for the tip Pete. Not sure it is entirely relevant to my current attempt to use the 4th axis but I do a little 3D every now and again and am definitely interested in what you say. And wow, that is some serious levels of securing the piece. I have only 3D cut mdf or ply. I clamp the pieces usi...

Re: 4th axis

RE: feed rate and spindle speed. The help PDF says see an appendix that is not there. Using a 6mm ballnose on hardwood what might be a reasonable feed rate, spindle speed and roughing cut depth? I am thinking: feed rate = 2000 spindle speed = 3000 roughing cut depth = 2mm Do these sound about right?

4th axis

Hello

We have a Vertical Router and plan to use the 4th Axis for the first time.

I presume I can mount the 4th Axis either horizontally or vertically as long as I have the x and y axis set appropriately in the QuickCam 4D CNC Output window. Is that correct?

Thanks

Hello Martin

Yes it's Porter-Cable and yes, one of the brushes is very worn.

Thanks very much.

Stopped spinning

Running the router this morning the spin unexpectedly started to wind down and up. I made an emergency stop. Since which it never spins. i.e. when starting auto the bit does not spin but the machine otherwise proceeds to move as if it was working fine. Obviously I stop the machine before a non spinn...

Re: Squeeking on the z axis

We are back up running after some overdue maintenance. Now I see we have a broken part that needs replacing. The most forward metal plate clip that holds the accordion gaiter has bent. The actual accordion seems intact but ruffled. Can I purchase a replacement plate or gaiter (whichever is easiest) ...

Re: Squeeking on the z axis

Upon further investigation I see the accordion gaiter below has come lose. It appears some dust has gotten into the z-axis thread which is causing the problem. My proposed course of action: 1) Blow out as much dust as possible with air. 2) Lubricate 3) clip back into position the gaiter Does that so...

Squeeking on the z axis

Hello After a few years light use our school vertical router has suddenly started making a worrying noise. Jogging on the z axis there is an almighty squeeking. Perhaps there is some oiling required but it is beyond my knowledge. I have never seen any documentation about maintenance. I have some cou...

Re: Problems Since Upgrading To VR Milling 5.54.0.630

I don't think it is the potentiometer. The potentiometer will turn to indicate up to 150% when not running (this is when "Home" is selected or when "Auto" is selected but before "Start" is pressed). As soon as "Start" is pressed only 100% and lower are possible. This was not the case before the upgr...

Re: Problems Since Upgrading To VR Milling 5.54.0.630

I have just experienced the Z-Axis problem again and guess what - you were correct with your first suggestion that the tool is moving in the collet. It is somewhat related to the upgrade in that I chnaged the material step down after the upgrade (to reduce 3 cuts to 2 using 12mm straight cutter). Pr...

Re: Problems Since Upgrading To VR Milling 5.54.0.630

Thanks for your help. I am using a straight cutter. You seem convinced this is not a software problem. Presumably there are many people using this release with this router and no one else is experiencing these problems. Is that correct? It would be a coincidence that a physical problem (loose tool, ...

Re: Problems Since Upgrading To VR Milling 5.54.0.630

I think the previous version was VR Milling 5.1xx. Could the tool moving in the collet be the problem? I slapped my head when I read your suggestion but I have my doubts: 1. The tool would have to be moving out of the collet against the force 2. The tool seems seated fine after the problem 3. I neve...

Problems Since Upgrading To VR Milling 5.54.0.630

I am experiencing problems since upgrading to VR Milling 5.54.0.630. I am using a Vertical Router. I have an fnc file (produced with Quickcam 2D Design) which I use repeatedly. Mostly it runs fine but occasionally the Z-Axis will change whilst the machine is cutting. The Z-Axis changes so the cutter...

Re: What Value To Use For Tooth Load?

Actually, I have an immediate question regarding controlling the step down when using QCPro. Does setting the step down for a cut impose a maximum step down if Adaptive Step Down is checked? i.e. When using a 2mm cutter I set step down to 1mm and check Adaptive Step Down. Does this mean the step dow...

Re: What Value To Use For Tooth Load?

Hello Steve, thanks again for the response.

I will need to digest what you say and experiment with the machine before I respond. Unfortunately, I will not have time before the school easter break so it may be a few weeks before I ask another question resulting from your post.

Re: What Value To Use For Tooth Load?

Hello Steve, thanks for the response. Most of our work is with 6-18mm MDF/Plywood (with a little acrylic). We have straight two flute Trend TCT cutters sizes 2mm to 12mm. I have just purchased our first ball nose cutter as we experiment with 3D. I have made a few successful simple 3D cuts using the ...

What Value To Use For Tooth Load?

The QuickCam Pro help file proposes a formula to calculate feedrate: Feedrate (mm/min) = Tooth Load (mm) * Number of teeth * Spindle Speed in RPM Please can anyone explain how to know what value to use for tooth load? The help file includes a table of suggested tooth loads (for various cutter types)...
