Re: Viceroy metric lathe ex school)
The cross slide screw is 1/2" diameter 2.5mm pitch LH modified square section thread which means that it is almost square with just 5 degrees flank angle each side. You'd have to either grind a tool to turn a nut or make a tap to suit. Another option is to make a nut from delrin, following the instr...

Re: Introduction of a seldom version of Viceroy 280 VS
The cross slide screw is indeed 1/2" diameter 2.5mm pitch. They simply changed the inch screw's pitch from 10tpi to 2.5mm to make it a metric screw.

Re: synchro 280 headstock oil
My gears had certainly swollen. It caused the teeth to bind and made the mounting holes go over-sized as I found out when I had to dismantle it. I don't know that it's a problem with the oil so much as with the Technyl A90 plastic, whatever that might be, absorbing it over the long term - I couldn't...

Re: viceroy 280 synchro electrical issue
Aah yes, that would make sense. It would be worth asking if the DC braking actually ever worked. If the spindle didn't ever seem to be braked then the best thing to do would be to disconnect the braking system altogether. The lathe will work perfectly without it.

Re: viceroy 280 synchro electrical issue
My machine didn't have any such PCB, and it doesn't seem to be shown in that wiring schematic Andy posted. I wonder if it is part of the optional DC-injection braking system, or perhaps something that was added on later machines, or maybe your lathe was once a combination lathe/mill variety? The onl...

Re: viceroy 280 synchro electrical issue
I just noticed you said a relay controls the contactors, Mine didn't have any relays the buttons acted directly on the contactors themselves. Here is what I had in my Synchro.

Re: viceroy 280 synchro electrical issue
Compare the pull-in coil resistances. If they are the same then check the mechanical interlock is functioning properly and go over all your electrical connections. If the suspect coil has a different resistance to the other two, you could sacrifice the coolant pump coil for the motor contactor.

Re: viceroy 280 synchro electrical issue
Has the lathe been converted to run on single phase? If it has, the voltage is not enough to hold the contactors in properly. I had to modify mine to work on 240v.

Re: Acceptable Motor Temperature??
If what he said is true why aren't there melted single phase motors on lathes all over the country? I had a single phase motor on my viceroy it never got more than warm even after multiple stop-starts. Have one on my mill it doesn't either. That 'tech' is spinning you a yarn to cover up the fact tha...

Re: Acceptable Motor Temperature??
Doesn't sound right. I have stop/started my lathe probably two dozen times in an hour without the motor suffering. I don't think that putting holes in the cabinet will help at all. It's not like the door seals or anything there's plenty of placed for air to get in. I would get in touch with the supp...

Re: TDS 1/1 Cross Slde Micrometer Dial Problem
Les your 2.5mm screw should be 0.0984" so it's only half a thou out which could be wear in the screw. dakes55 the first thing to ask is are you working it all in one direction, in other words turn the screw clockwise until the dial gauge reads zer, then zero the cross slide dial, then make one turn ...

Re: Turning parts with features on reverse
That's it, it's a bit of a long-winded process especially with a bolt-on chuck mount. Get it close and use a pair of same-size feelers to measure the backplate gap. keep going up in sizes until the feelers are snug both sides then check that you haven't jacked it off the taper by Say you have 5 thou...

Re: Turning parts with features on reverse
Right, well since Paul Compton says in that thread that it compares to DIN 55021 with it's 7.125 degree taper angle (which happens to be 1:8 taper), and since that taper angle is exactly the same as camlock, and since Denford supplied lathes with d1-3 camlock taper, it's a fairly reasonable assumpti...

The thread dial has a peg sticking out of it that plus intonation hole and it's secured by a grub screw.

Re: TDS 1/1 GBL Lead Screw Dial
You don't strictly need a dial if your motor reverses. I never used a dial on any of my lathes. You can just back the tool out, reverse the motor and run the carriage back to the start of the thread.

Re: New 280VS owner
The dragging screw could possibly be sorted by adding a washer inboard of the tailstock-end support block between the thrust washer and the screw shoulder. You could even just try loosening the screw that holds the block and tapping it gently towards the headstock. That tails-stock block is what set...

Ok send me a message with your address, pay the postage and it's yours. I seriously recommend you make your best effort to change that front plate without removing the gear change lever though. It has an odd number of splines and teeth on the rack gear and if the pinion disengages it's easty to tras...
